Each week I will share with you my latest obsession. This will usually centre on little pockets of the interweb you may not come across. I'll take you down some dark alleyways, the kind you usually just briskly walk past for fear of getting mugged. Don't worry, I've got your back. Follow me...

THIS WEEK'S MONOMANIA:

THE ART OF THE SUPER-CUT

2010 was without a doubt the year of the super-cut. Glorious souls with way too much time on their hands compiling videos from scores of different films. Often taking key phrases that are frequently repeated these videos reminded us that many screen-writers resort to tired and repetitive sayings.

Before we get into depth on this shit let's take a look at a short video to clarify what I'm trying to get at. 'Blah blah blah' is taken to hypnotic levels with this short super cut.

Not every supercut is as watchable as that one though. How about the phrase 'You look like shit..."? You wouldn't believe how often it has appeared as evidenced in this epic 5 minute supercut. Don't worry if you can't last the whole thing although if you do then you will probably start using the phrase in your everyday life...

Even more epic than that is this 6 minute supercut of every use of the phrase "We're not in Kansas anymore".

Now that you are getting the gist of this whole supercut movement I want to introduce you to a guy called Harry Hanrahan. He is probably the best 'super-cutter' out there at the moment, creating some truly amazing and hilarious videos that pain me to think how many hours he must've spent collating all this material.

My absolute favorite of Hanrahan's videos is entitled 'Nicolas Cage Losing His Shit'. In less than 5 minutes Hanrahan manages to succinctly compile all the reasons why Cage is such a unique and engaging presence. If you only watch one video from beginning to end in this article then please make it this one...

Another one of Hanrahan's definitive videos is this 10 minute compilation of Arnold Schwarzenegger one-liners. Perfectly cut together this will not only bring back lovely memories of being 10 years old and watching Commando late at night but also make one yearn for the Austrian's return to film, just as long as we get to hear him say 'Bull-shit' one more time... (if this clip isn't enough for you then make sure to dig up Part 2, another 10 whole minutes of Arnold goodness)

If one Nicolas Cage video wasn't enough for you then please enjoy this encore Cage montage, again from Hanrahan, entitled "The Evolution of Nicolas Cage's Hair"... Yep you read that correctly...

For more Harry Hanrahan goodness check out his youtube user page HERE. You will find great supercuts of phrases like "Get me out of here!" and "It's Showtime!" as well as a brilliant montage of Julianne Moore crying in 20 different films. That Moore can cry like a demon let me tell you...

Oh and that reminds me. Wasn't George Lucas a brilliant creative mind...

Now if you'll excuse me I have to go and dig deeper into the recesses of this wonderful thing called the internet... Oh speaking of generic turns of phrase, that reminds me...
