Monomania: Between Two Ferns with Zach Galifianakis

[mon-uh-mey-nee-uh, -meyn-yuh]
1. (no longer in technical use) a psychosis characterised by thoughts confined to one idea or group of ideas.
2. an inordinate or obsessive zeal for or interest in a single thing, idea, subject, or the like.
Each week I will share with you my latest obsession. This will usually centre on little pockets of the interweb you may not come across. I'll take you down some dark alleyways, the kind you usually just briskly walk past for fear of getting mugged. Don't worry, I've got your back. Follow me...
Between Two Ferns with Zach Galifianakis is simply one of the funniest things going around. I'm not going to write paragraph upon paragraph describing what is funny about it and why because you simply have to just watch it.
I will briefly talk about Zach Galifianakis though. I think he is one of the funniest guys working in comedy today. He seems on the cusp of properly breaking into film and television but I have found that producers seem to be having trouble making the most of his specific talents. He has been popping up in different shows and films for 10 years now so he isn't exactly a new talent but his performance in The Hangover last year really stepped up his profile. He also starred in a great little HBO comedy series called Bored To Death last year with Jason Schwartzman and Ted Danson. If you can dig up that show I highly recommend it. He also released a very funny stand up film called Live at the Purple Onion in 2007. His work in Between Two Ferns is classic Galifianakis. It's full of random outbursts of anger, non-sequiturs, uncomfortable pauses and high profile celebrity guests.
Here are three of my favourite episodes but I recommend visiting the Funny Or Die website and watching the rest. A great comic talent at the top of his game.
I am very likely to feature some more of his shorter work over the coming weeks as there are a few more smaller viral things he has done that are absolutely hilarious.
See you next week when I chronicle yet another passing obsession....
