Monomania: Rare Exports - A Christmas Movie To Get Excited About
1. (no longer in technical use) a psychosis characterised by thoughts confined to one idea or group of ideas.
2. an inordinate or obsessive zeal for or interest in a single thing, idea, subject, or the like.
Each week I will share with you my latest obsession. This will usually centre on little pockets of the interweb you may not come across. I'll take you down some dark alleyways, the kind you usually just briskly walk past for fear of getting mugged. Don't worry, I've got your back. Follow me...
THIS WEEK'S MONOMANIA:
Rare Exports: You Better Watch Out
In 2003 a short film began to blast around the internet entitled Rare Exports. This brilliantly funny little idea from Finnish director Jalmari Helander garnered an enormous amount of attention. First things first. The basic idea needs to just be experienced so before I say anything else I would implore a few minutes of your time to watch this short film. Then we'll chat more. See you soon....
There you go! What a great little idea and executed perfectly. Hunting wild Santas! 2 years later Helander reappeared with a second Rare Exports short film. This time he examined the idea of actually how this organization tames and distributes their merchandise. The second film is even better than the first!
So now it's five years later and why am I telling you about this? Well, Helander has finally moved into feature film territory and this Christmas will premiere his debut film Rare Exports. Check out the trailer below and tell me you are not excited. It promises to be darkly funny and potentially rather bloody. Finally a Christmas movie we can look forward to! An international distributor better pick this one up otherwise I may be liable to go on a Santa style rampage.
